The OB/GYN

We are in search of an OBGYN (gynecologist). Sarah's maternity insurance restricts us to use only one of two hospitals in Malaysia - (a) Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre or (b) Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur. In other countries, the list varies. We have visited a doctor at Gleneagles for the last two months but have realized that we are unable to accept the inefficiencies of his office and so, our search for a new doctor has began. Searching for a new doctor is an adventure, what is the criteria for a new doctor? Do we have a minimum set of expectations (qualifications from certain nations, schools, etc) and go with the first doctor we meet that meet those expectations? Or do we rely on the knowledge of the crowd and scan through forum posts of other parents who share their experiences? The great invention of google has at least allowed us to eliminate the doctors we don't want to visit -- people with bad experiences are all too happy to share their trauma on the internet. Or do we check out recommendations by well meaning friends, who were referred by well meaning friends, who knew a friend, who had a sister that was married to a man whose cousin went to school with this other doctor? This is the time when you wished there was a publicly available score cards on doctors and a ranking. Even a rating by previous patients would be nice.

We currently have a leaning towards Pantai because we have been visiting Gleneagles and are not too happy on how they set up the doctor clinics. In looking at the list of doctors, we usually start by eliminating all doctors who graduated from Malaysia because the highest ranking University in Malaysia has dropped from the list of the top 200 universities in the world (read here: The Star). The medical cost of each visit is approximately the same whether you choose a doctor who went to a good a school or not, however, according to Steven Levitt, the skill level is approximately 10 years difference -- a newly graduated doctor from a good school is as skilled as a doctor from an average school with 10 years experience, and in the unlikely event of a life threatening situation, you will have 20% higher chance of surviving. So, we definitely don't want to go to a doctor who graduated from a school that was ranked lower than 200. So, maybe we should look at the global ranking (click here) and look for the doctor that graduated from the highest ranking university we can find.

  1. I am very impressed by your research, and so thankful as well! I sent your blog link to my husband as it looks exactly like something he would do.. chart & all. I told him he has a twin somewhere in KL.. lol

Any chance you have this research for Prince Court as well??

We've just started our research for an obgyn (today actually) as we're interested in having a baby here but I'm a little terrified... ok, VERY terrified. I'd love to hear how everything turned out and your feedback on the doctor/hospital you chose. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. -Tiffany

  2. Finding a good gynecologist is one of the most important health concerns for any woman who has entered adulthood. It is commonly advised that a woman begin consulting with a gynecologist when she first becomes sexually active. Obstetrician Boca Raton

  4. Omg I'm so happy to share this!!! I've been thinking I've lost my mind and it was some mental case. I myself had my tubes tied after my 3rd child. I have a condition that makes having babies so hard on my body. About 6 months ago I too would feel something like "kicks" of course I thought I was out right crazy. I never spoke to anyone about what was going through. How could I? They'd think I was nuts!!! Well my periods have been getting so bad that I reached out to my best friend who also had the operation to see if she had experienced any symptoms with her periods since! Of course we were in the same boat. I broke down and told her I almost felt at times I was pregnant I felt so crazy just typing this out to her. I was beyond nervous she would think it was a nut case. To my surprise she also had similar symptoms. We both are researching what this could be. That's when I came across this website on Google of dr Itua Herbal Center. While scrolling through these comments I stumbled upon how he treated HIV/HHerpes also helped a woman to get pregnant with his herbal medicines. When I read what he had been going through I just broke down and cried for the longest time. Finally I got a help that I ever wanted I and my friend purchase Dr Itua herbal medicines and we both used it which was really effective it cure my cramp issues so I will recommend anyone going through some health issue to contact Dr Itua Herbal Center on E-Mail : drituaherbalcenter@gmail.com Or Whats-App +2348149277967 He cure HIV/Aids, Herpes, Cancers, And other stubborn disease make sure someone here talk to someone about this who is going through the same thing as us. Ty for sharing. I now know we're not alone!!!
